Sample Sunday: Stevie Wonder – “Pastime Paradise”
No special welcoming this week, but welcome to Sample Sunday!
The sample for this week is a surprising one for many people. A lot of people know of both artists, but as they say, history tends to repeat itself………in the way of samples.
The Sample: Stevie Wonder- “Pastime Paradise”
To say that Stevie Wonder is a legend, is an understatement. From his legendary Diamond certified album Songs in the Key of Life, “Pastime Paradise” can be found as the 3rd track on side 2 of this amazing vinyl. Although it took Stevie Wonder 18 studio albums before he charted, this was a great first album. The simple lyrics of this song have so much meaning with the comparison of good and evil and the disregard of the present, and only living by the goods that were in the past. Stevie Wonder ends the song calling out society to create a future society of good and leave everything from your past behind you.
WHO IS STEVIE WONDER?
Stevland Hardaway Morris, commonly known by his stage name Stevie Wonder, is an award winning songwriter, instrumentalist, activist and record producer. Born in 1950, Stevie was born about 6 weeks premature, which kept the blood vessels in his eyes from developing properly. This is the cause of his blindness. He signed to Motown at the very young age of 11, and had his first hit single at the age of 13. Throughout his musical career, he has recorded over 30 US top-ten hits and won 22 Grammy Awards in addition to a Lifetime Achievement Award. Furthermore, he has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as well as the Songwriters Hall of Fame.
Stevie Wonder has made several major hits over his career, which many people have sampled. From De La Soul to the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Stevie Wonders influence on music has a wide range. Most notably was Coolio’s 1995 Grammy Award Winning “Gangsta’s Paradise.” One of the top 100 Hip-Hop songs of all time, it was ranked as well on the Billboard Greatest Songs of All Time. Sampling “Pastime Paradise,” it has sold well over 10 million copies worldwide.
