J Dilla – “Anthem” feat. Frank-N-Dank

I’ll break this down so it does not get too confusing. In 2002, J Dilla was working on an album for MCA records titled Pay Jay. It was a Dilla vocal album with most of the production coming from outside producers.  Dilla wanted to work with some of his favorites and the album would feature beats from Pete Rock, Hi-Tek, Kanye West, Malib, Nottz, Karriem Riggins and a few others. Unfortunately, the album would be shelved as internal troubles at the label  would cause it to be lost in the shuffle.  MCA did not know what to do with Dilla, at the time, because he was known as a producer and he was coming at them as solo act . Eventually, Pay Day would leak to the internet, guaranteeing a release would not happen.

Pay Jay Productions is also the name of the label Dilla founded to publish his music in 2001. The Dilla Estate has revised the imprint and will use it to release another long lost Dilla vocal album, The Diary. How could this be confusing? Longtime Dilla fans will surly recognize that production credits for The Diary, almost matches up perfectly with the shelved Pay Jay album. Which brings us to today –

“Anthem” produced by Dilla himself was not featured on the Pay Jay album. While an official track listing for The Diary has not been released yet, some might speculate, The Diary might be composed of tracks from the previously shelved Pay Jay album along with new previously unheard, unreleased material.

There still also  exists the possibility The Diary is a different collection of songs, J Dee was always working. What is it to say he did not do numerous projects with these producers? Whatever it turns out to be, more Dilla is always a good thing. “Anthem” is also getting a special 12” release and will also feature another unreleased song “Trucks.” You can pre-order your copy over at
