SmCity: Finding Water in the American Sahara

SmCity describes juggling being a MC, promoter and video director as “the indie life.” If you live in the DMV, there is a good chance you have been to or seen an event under The Indie Life banner. Not satisfied with the performance opportunities in his area, Simeon “SmCity” Booker created The Indie Life concert series, not only as a platform for himself, but as a means for other DMV artists to have meaningful opportunities to perform and build their brand. By bringing in national acts and booking them alongside hot DMV artists, Sm created headlines people wanted to see.

This creative intuition would not only be limited to his concert series, but also applied to his music. Both his Indie Life: Hate, Love & Money and Dream Cemetery tapes are crafted with care and insight, presenting listeners with something they want to hear.

I recently had the pleasure of speaking with SmCity about his career so far. In our extended conversation, we discussed the beginnings of his The Indie Life series, the tonal shift and direction of his latest release, Dream Cemetery and how SXSW tried to shut down his Indie Life event in Austin this past march. SmCity is not slowing down anytime soon and he has plenty of surprises for both fans of his music and concert series in the near future.

You will not want to miss a minute of it. Stream or download the conversation below.
