First Spin: Magna Carta…Holy Grail

What a Forth of July weekend it was! Jay-Z pretty much hijacked the internet with the release of his 12th Studio album, Magna Carta…Holy Grail. Powered by one of the largest cross marking campaigns seen in decades, it was virtually impossible to browse the web and not run into Jay and his Samsung partnership.

The crown jewel being his much lauded Magna Carta app, which would grant exclusive first access to one million Galaxy 3s, 4s and Notes users. That necessary didn’t happen, as Samsung’s servers almost instantly crash at the stroke of midnight as fans rushed to get the album. To no surprise, many would hear the album through streams and torrents before Samsung’s servers could recover. While Jay boasted “he shut down the internet,”  the real winners of the night were Funk Master Flex and Hot 97, who had a world premier broadcast of the album, creating a listening session of epic proportions.

You can bet, we were among the many tuning in. While it has been few days and the magnitude of the event is starting to cool down, the release of Magna Carta will not be forgotten anytime soon. Hours after it dropped, Mickey Retro, Boman and special guest Shay J got together to record their raw first impressions of the album. The crew looks back at night and reflects on Flex’s broadcast, real time twitter reactions and gives their first thoughts on Magna Carta. So kick back and relax, this is a First Spin you will not want to miss!
