The Slice Extended: IllClinton

For the two brothers from north Atlanta, Brennan James and Blake Belair,  2013 was truly a remarkable year. The two released their first mixtape under the IllClinton banner in February. Up until then, they had mainly been a production duo, but now Brennan was stepping in front of the mic, while Blake stayed on the boards. The results was Illanta, a booming project that often paired trap centric beats, with smooth soul samples, while Brennan assaulted the mic with lyrical wizardry.

An impressive first release to say the least. It was not long before buzz from the tape would bring them to the attention of Scion A/V, who sponsor would their next EP, The ILL Experiment. Refining their sound further, the EP was built from the ground up with all original production. Not long after, IllClinton would travel to CMJ in NYC for some of their first performances ever.

For this latest Slice Extended, I had the opportunity to speak to both brothers about their year. We go over their beginnings in music and family’s connection to Atlanta legends. Describing their style as “Boom-trap,” the brothers go into detail about their creative process. We also had the chance to speak about what it’s like preforming at CMJ, what coming in Illanta II and more. There’s much, so make sure you subscribe, download and listen below.
